US President Donald Trump warned on Friday that it might take weeks, if not months, to know the outcome of the November 3 ballot that will pit him against Democrat Joe Biden.
In the midst of the controversy over the post office and in the face of concerns that an extraordinary influx of postal votes, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, could overwhelm the poll organizers, the Republican has been hammering for weeks that the highly anticipated result could be delayed .
“We will never have an election result on November 3,” he said Friday during a speech near Washington. “In my opinion, we will not be able to know how this election ends for weeks, months, maybe never”.
Accusation
Lagging behind in the polls behind Joe Biden, Donald Trump accuses the Democrats of pushing for postal voting to be able to manipulate the results. But he also mentioned a logistical problem if the number of ballots sent by mail exploded as expected, in this country with a history already marked by controversial results and long days of counting. “We are not prepared, 51 million ballots. This will be extremely humiliating for our country, ”added the American president. “It is a very serious problem for democracy”.
On Wednesday, a senior U.S. official charged with protecting the integrity of the poll said his biggest concern was not about possible foreign interference before the election, but after the November 3 vote.
If he is also concerned about attempts to influence Russia, China, Iran and others during the campaign, William Evanina, director of the National Center for Counter-Intelligence and Security (NCSC) spoke said “worried from election day”. “We must prepare, as a nation, that our election is not decided on November 3,” he added.
