WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) – The United States plans to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions to aid in its counteroffensive against Russian forces, U.S. officials said on Thursday.
New US military aid including cluster munitions for 155mm Howitzer howitzers is expected to be unveiled on Friday, said two US officials, who preferred to remain anonymous.
Sending cluster munitions to Ukraine is “actively under consideration”, commented the White House, without announcing anything immediately. President Joe Biden is expected next week in Vilnius, Lithuania, for a NATO summit.
Human Rights Watch on Thursday called on Russia and Ukraine to stop using cluster munitions and urged the United States not to supply them.
Cluster munitions, banned by more than 120 countries, scatter small explosive projectiles randomly over large areas.
Some submunitions do not explode on impact and pose a danger to local populations, decades after the conflict.
