They were already 22 who wanted to challenge Donald Trump in 2020, and a prestigious name was added this Thursday to the list of Democrats who dream of settling in the White House. Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York, has indeed announced that he is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, in a video posted on YouTube.
In this three-minute sequence, the 58-year-old mayor, praising the policies he has introduced in the first American city for the benefit of “working families” since 2014, says he is “ready to challenge” Donald Trump, another New Yorker. “There is a lot of money in the world, there is a lot of money in this country, it’s just in the wrong hands,” he also said in the video, a phrase he repeated a lot in New York.
Very criticized by the New York media
Then guest of the morning show “Good Morning America” on the ABC channel, alongside his wife Chirlane McCray, Bill de Blasio highlighted several programs established under his mandate in the American financial capital: free kindergarten for all, free health coverage for those who do not have it, or the mentally ill support program run by his wife.
The White House is however still very far for Bill de Blasio, very criticized by the New York media, which did everything to dissuade him from appearing, in vain. The latter denounce haphazardly his lack of tangible results in the face of poverty, his lack of charisma, his daily trips to his ex-fiefdom of Brooklyn to do his gym, or his bickering with the Democratic governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo.
It starts from far in the polls
The polls, so far dominated by former vice-president Joe Biden and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, are also very unfavorable to him. The last mentioning it, published in early April by Quinnipiac University, indicated that, even among New Yorkers, 76% of voters did not want to see him go into battle, only 18% being in favor.
But “the poll that counts is the election,” Bill de Blasio repeated Thursday. “It’s not where you start, it’s where you end. The Democratic primary will begin in February with the Iowa caucus and end with the Washington DC primary in June. The presidential election will take place in November.
Donald Trump, who has become accustomed to commenting on the Democrats’ campaign entries, sent a welcoming tweet to Bill de Blasio, “considered the worst mayor of the United States”, according to him. “It’s a Joke, but if you like high taxes and crime, it’s for you. NEW YORK HATES IT ”, concluded the current President of the United States.
