United States Takes Additional Measures Against Wagner Group in Africa to Ensure Accountability

“You will see the United States take additional measures” against the Wagner group, Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, told the press on Tuesday, June 27. According to the latter, these measures, which have not been detailed, must ensure that the Russian paramilitary group is accountable for its “destructive” activities in Africa. The manager clarified that it was not related to the abortive mutiny of the last weekend of the leader of the Wagner group or at the war in ukraine.

The Russian paramilitary group is increasingly active in Africa, particularly in Mali and the Central African Republic. The United States was to announce these measures at the beginning of the week but decided to postpone them a little so as not to appear to take sides in the crisis which unfolded this weekend in Russia.

“Where Wagner goes, he sows death”

“We believe that where Wagner goes, he sows death and destruction in his wake,” the spokesperson said, “urging governments in Africa or elsewhere to cease all cooperation with Wagner.”

Belarus announced the arrival on Tuesday of the head of the paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigojine, as part ofan agreement that ended his rebellion in Russia. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s decision to host Prigozhin “once again reflects the fact that he puts the interests of (Russian President) Vladimir Putin and the interests of the Kremlin before those of his people”, commented Matthew Miller.
