United StatesSeven dead in double shootings in California
California was once again bereaved on Monday after a double shooting that left at least seven people dead. The alleged perpetrator was arrested.
Seven farm workers were killed Monday near San Francisco in two shootings that appear to have been perpetrated by a co-worker, who has since been arrested, authorities said.
“At 2:22 p.m. today, sheriff’s officers were dispatched (…) following a report of a shooting that resulted in multiple casualties,” San Mateo County Police Chief Christina Corpus said at the time. of a press conference in the evening. “Upon arrival, officers found four deceased victims of gunshot wounds,” she continued, noting that a fifth seriously injured person had been hospitalized. Three other victims were discovered in another location, bringing the death toll to seven, she said.
The two shootings took place on farms in the municipality of Half Moon Bay, close to each other, local television affiliates ABC and NBC said. The victims are Chinese agricultural workers, according to a local elected official quoted by NBC.
Spectacular arrest
The suspect, Chunli Zhao, 67, then went to the city police station, Christina Corpus said. Journalists were already waiting for a press conference. The spectacular images of his arrest show him wearing a gray vest with red sleeves and a light gray cap, being tackled to the ground and handcuffed, then searched, before being escorted by several police officers.
“Zhao was taken into custody without incident and a semi-automatic handgun was located in his vehicle,” said Christina Corpus, adding that the motive for these two shootings was not yet known.
This new killing comes less than 48 hours after the shooting that killed 11 people in a dance hall near Los Angeles, which California Governor Gavin Newsom did not fail to deplore. “I am in the hospital to meet victims of a mass shooting there when I am pulled away to inform me of another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy after tragedy,” the Democrat tweeted.
Joe Biden has also been informed, his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter. The American president “has asked federal law enforcement to provide all necessary assistance to local authorities,” she said.
