On Monday evening, the United States revealed the numbers of its strategic nuclear deterrence arsenal, stressing that it wants to respect the “New START” nuclear disarmament treaty, calling on Russia, which has suspended its participation in it, to do the same.
On March 1, the United States was deploying a total of 662 intercontinental ballistic missiles, a number that includes missiles mounted on submarines and bombers, with 1,419 nuclear warheads and 800 launchers, according to a State Department statement.
“The United States calls on Russia to respect its legal obligations by returning to the New START Treaty and the stability, transparency and verification measures it contains,” the statement added.
In February, Russia suspended its participation in the New START treaty in response to the assistance provided by Western countries in the Ukraine war. All Western powers condemned this decision.
The New START treaty, signed in 2010, is the last nuclear disarmament agreement between Russia and the United States.
Moscow announced in early August the suspension of scheduled inspections at its military sites.
The New START treaty limits the nuclear arsenals of each of the two nuclear powers to 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads, a reduction of about 30 percent compared to the previous limit set in 2002. It also limits the number of missile launchers and bomber aircraft to 800.
The treaty also provides for audits of the arsenal of the two countries that were suspended during the COVID-@DIGITS pandemic, and US President Joe Biden’s administration tried to return to work without success.
