United States Reopens Four Border Crossings with Mexico as Illegal Immigration Numbers Decline

Jan 03, 2024 at 6:08 AM Update: 19 minutes ago

The United States reopened four border crossings with Mexico on Thursday as the number of illegal immigrants has declined. In addition, according to American officials, more personnel are available.

This concerns border crossings in the states of Texas, Arizona and California. The U.S. Border Patrol closed it in December as workers struggled to process the flow of illegal migrants. Sometimes there were almost eleven thousand a day.

Last week there were still 6,400 illegal migrants per day. That is a significant drop compared to pre-Christmas levels.

US Customs saw nearly 2.5 million migrants at the southern border in 2023. That’s a record.

Mexican and U.S. officials pledged last week to work more closely to tackle migration at their shared border. That decision came after a meeting between top US officials and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Since then, border control has been tightened on the Mexican side.

In the US Congress, Republicans in particular continue to push for stricter security measures at the border. They have even linked the introduction of such measures to the approval of foreign aid. That means: no weapons for Ukraine as long as border security is not tightened.
