United States Phone scams increasingly generate revenue, study finds

Phone scams are generating more and more income for crooks. Here is the conclusion of a study carried out by Truecaller, a company which publishes an application which offers in particular filtering and blocking of calls, reports Lemon Juicer, this Sunday. According to the results of this study, phone scams could cost Americans 29.8 billion euros this year.

This is much more than in 2020 (19.7 billion) or in 2019 (10.5 billion). In addition, the report finds that this contentious activity is booming. A total of 59.49 million Americans are expected to be targeted by these attacks this year. This is three million more victims than in 2020.

The 35-44 year olds are the most targeted

The financial losses of the victims are also increasing. They reached 502 dollars against 351 dollars last year at the same period, an increase of 43%. According to the Truecaller study, the pandemic has played a significant role in the rise in scams. Some crooks have, for example, used it to set up false charitable operations, supposed to help people who are victims of Covid-19.

In other information the study revealed, three in five Americans (60%) admitted to losing money to a robocall. And contrary to popular belief, the victims are not mainly the oldest people but rather the 35 to 44 age group. 46% of scammed men fall into this age category. In addition, across all age groups, men (59.4%) are more targeted by scams than women (38.3%), according to the report.
