WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives said on Thursday she would create a new parliamentary committee to investigate the assault on the Capitol in Washington on January 6.
Nancy Pelosi declined to give a specific timeline for the investigation, saying it “will take as long as it takes.”
The announcement comes after Senate Republicans blocked the establishment of an independent commission at the end of May to investigate the January 6 incidents in the federal capital, in which five people including a police officer were killed.
Speaking at a press conference, Nancy Pelosi gave no details on the composition of the commission but clearly expressed her wish that the two parties appoint members. She said she hopes House Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy will appoint “responsible people.”
Noting that she had not completely abandoned the idea of an independent committee, she said Democrats saw the parliamentary committee as “complementary” and not intended to replace an independent committee.
In what was an assault on democracy that shocked the United States and around the world, hundreds of supporters of then-Republican President Donald Trump stormed onto Capitol Hill in an attempt to prevent certification by Congressman’s election victory for Democrat Joe Biden in the ballot last November.
More than 480 people have since been arrested on charges in connection with the attack, which prompted Congressional Democrats to launch a second impeachment proceeding against Donald Trump for “incitement to insurgency”, days before the end of mandate of the former tenant of the White House.
