United States: outbreak of salmonellosis linked to …

Of United States, 2 residents of Maine were hospitalized after an outbreak of salmonellosis bound to the crabmeat of Hardie’s Crabmeat at Deer Isle, state health authorities report. the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Maine is investigating at least 5 cases related to this outbreak. Four residents of Maine and a person from New Hampshire are among the confirmed cases of the epidemic.

The Maine CDC and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry discovered that the crab meat was likely contaminated during preparation and packaging. Authorities in Maine recommend discarding packages of Hardie’s Crabmeat purchased between June 15 and August 15.

Reminders on the salmonellosis :

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 6 hours to 6 days after being exposed to the bacteria.
The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days and most people recover without treatment. In some people, the disease can be so severe that the patient must be hospitalized. Salmonella infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other parts of the body.
Children under 5, adults 65 and over, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have serious illness.
