(New York) American Venus Williams, who had an invitation, announced her withdrawal Wednesday, due to an injury, for the United States Open which will begin Monday in New York without her compatriot Sofia Kenin, tested positive for COVID-19.

“This is not the best news. I join Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on the injured list. It’s great, great, super disappointing, ”said the 41-year-old player in a video posted on social media.
“I had problems with my leg all summer and I couldn’t get over them. I did my best here in Chicago (where she was eliminated in the first round earlier this week, Editor’s note) but I couldn’t resolve the equation. This time, I couldn’t do a miracle, ”she explained.
The oldest Williams, seven-time winner of Grand Slam tournaments (five times at Wimbledon, twice at the United States Open) did not specify the nature of the physical problem which prevents her from taking part in the tournament and that she hangs out from Wimbledon.

Later Wednesday, Sofia Kenin, 5e global player, in turn announced her withdrawal after contracting COVID-19. “Fortunately, I have been vaccinated so my symptoms have been quite mild. However, I continued to test positive so I will not be able to compete in the US Open next week, ”she wrote on her Twitter account.
Finally, among the men, the Canadian Milos Raonic, 34e World Cup, also withdrew from the US Open, complaining of an injury to his right leg.
