United States Open | Daniil Medvedev continues his journey

(New York) Russia’s Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

Second seed, Medvedev had seven breakages. His next rival will be Pablo Andujar of Spain.

Andrey Rublev, fifth seed, also won but Grigor Dimitrov, semi-finalist at this tournament two years ago, retired in deficit by straight sets and 0-4 against Alexei Popyrin.

American Frances Tiafoe was also among the winners of the day, 6-1, 6-2 and 7-5 against Guido Pella of Argentina.

On the women’s side, the Japanese Naomi Osaka reached the third round following the withdrawal of her opponent for medical reasons. The defending champion was to face Serbian Olga Danilovic.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza and Tunisian Ons Jabeur did not take long to advance to the next round.

Muguruza, ninth seed, defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-2. She will face in the next round the 18e seed Victoria Azarenka, who made the final at Flushing Meadows last year.

Jabeur, 20e seed, dismissed Maria Camila Osorio Serrano 6-0, 6-1, in 53 minutes.

Simona Halep won a second straight game at the New York tournament for the first time since 2016.

The Romanian crushed Kristina Kucova 6-3, 6-1.

Aleppo, 12e seeded, won two career Grand Slams, but never excelled at the US Open. She packed up in the first round in 2017 and 2018, and has never made it through the second round since participating in the quarter-finals in 2016.

Halep triumphed under the retractable roof as play was interrupted outside due to inclement weather.

Fifth seed Elina Svitolina won 6-2, 7-5 over Rebeka Masarova of Spain.
