The Democratic mayor of New York, once a supporter of an unlimited reception of illegal immigrants, is now forced to ask for urgent help from the American federal government in order to manage the massive arrivals of illegal immigrants in his city…
New York: the Democratic mayor overwhelmed by the immigration he advocated
“God laughs at men who deplore the effects whose causes they cherish” a quote that could apply to a lot of news in recent years. A new example comes to us from New York City, where Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, a longtime supporter of a general reception of illegal immigrants in the United States, is currently facing a problematic influx of migrants.
The number of immigrants has become so large in the Big Apple that the city councilor asked on July 19 for help from the federal government to manage these arrivals.
Also, Eric Adams said in a statement that currently, ” New York City is experiencing a marked increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving from Latin America and other regions. In some cases families are arriving on buses sent by the states of Texas and Arizona, while in other cases it appears people are being sent by the federal government “. According to the same document, more than 2,800 new asylum seekers have been registered in New York in recent weeks.
Moreover, a particularity of New York, the city has a law of “right to housing » which requires that all homeless asylum seekers arriving there can have access to emergency accommodation.
Washington Democrats also concerned
This obligation, combined with the influx of illegal immigrants, has resulted in the city’s homeless shelter system being overwhelmed, the mayor of New York lamented. The latter therefore demanded that the American federal government “partners with New York City to help asylum seekers navigate this process”while asking to provide him in parallel “financial and technical resources”.
Eric Adams is not the only Democratic mayor whose point of view has evolved significantly on the issue of mass immigration. On July 17, during a television program on CBS News, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser complained that homeless shelters in her city were filling up with illegal asylum seekers. And, just like the mayor of New York, she also asked for help from the federal government.
According to New York Post, Texas and Arizona (two states bordering Mexico and therefore on the front line in the face of migratory pressure) have sent migrants by bus to Washington, but the two governors have denied having sent buses of illegal immigrants to New York. These transfers to Washington would be motivated, according to them, by the desire to force the Democrats who continue to defend mass immigration policies to face the consequences of these policies themselves.
A rather successful objective since the two Democratic mayors have obviously revised their position vis-à-vis the reception of illegal migrants once confronted with the reality of the phenomenon.
A situation which is reminiscent of the French case…
Washington and New York are learning the hard way what small border towns in states like Texas and Arizona have been saying for years: illegal immigration has consequences. At least three Texas counties had to declare states of emergency recently due to the influx of migrants into their cities. These communities simply do not have the resources to support thousands more people in need of assistance. And can in no way count on the support of the federal authorities in charge of immigration.
Always according to New York Postin the first 18 months of the Biden administration, more than 3 million migrants entered the United States illegally.
A little like the elected “bobos” of the city centers of French metropolises, the elected Democrats did not, until very recently, really have to deal with the problems caused by illegal immigration. At the same time, they broadly supported Joe Biden’s open borders policy. But the government of the latter, faced with a saturation of border towns, is now forced to distribute these illegal immigrants in other American states.
It is therefore a safe bet that the changes of direction in terms of migration policy by the mayors of New York and Washington will be imitated in the future by other Democratic city officials.
