United States May Impose Sanctions Against Hungary for Pro-Russian Policy: Ben Cardin Calls for Action

The pro-Russian policy of official Budapest may work against Hungary: the United States may impose sanctions against the country.

The head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, recommended that the White House approve sanctions against Hungary and the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban for undermining the unity of the EU and NATO, writes Bloomberg.

The last straw that broke the West’s patience was an attempt by a Hungarian politician to interfere with the discussion of EU financial assistance for Ukraine and protests against Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Orban has once again shown himself to be the least reliable member of NATO, in addition to unduly delaying EU efforts to provide needed economic assistance to Ukraine until now” Cardin said.

He believes that Orban could fall under the Magnitsky Act, and Hungary could be excluded from the US visa waiver program.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó statedthat such news supposedly did not come as a surprise to him, but Budapest wants not only to maintain good relations with the United States, but also, if possible, to improve them.

It was previously reported that if Orban again will apply veto power at the February 1 EU summit on Ukraine, then European leaders are ready to undermine the Hungarian economy.

Before this, the Western press reported that on the eve of the summit in Brussels, Orban is becoming more and more accommodating.
