The United States, Japan and South Korea have condemned the “dangerous and aggressive behavior” adopted by China in support of its “illegal maritime claims”in a press release published Friday, August 18, against the backdrop of tensions between Beijing and the Philippines around a disputed atoll.

“We strongly oppose any unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region.“, declare the leaders of the three countries, gathered for an unprecedented summit at Camp David, near Washington.

Creation of a consultation mechanism

“We reaffirm the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” add US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in this joint statement.

The three countries will set up a joint consultation mechanism to coordinate their reactions to threats, Joe Biden announced during a joint press conference at the end of the summit.

China earlier this month urged the Philippines to remove a ship it ran aground two decades ago on a disputed atoll in the South China Sea, a source of tension between the two countries in recent weeks.
