United States: in the midst of a health crisis, the East Coast is hit by a major snowstorm (photos)

A snowstorm has hit the east coast of the United States, creating additional challenges amid the coronavirus pandemic and the vaccination campaign taking place across the region.

New York, Boston, Philadelphia: the northeastern United States woke up Thursday under a thick blanket of snow, after a storm that could disrupt the historic vaccination campaign against Covid-19.

The most important snowfall for several years

Up to 60 centimeters of snow fell in places for what constitutes the most important snowfall in the region for several years.

Faced with bad weather, testing centers for Covid-19 had to close in Baltimore and in the capital, Washington.

At Baltimore airport, a plane of the low-cost company Spirit went off the runway slightly after landing because of the ice, but the incident did not cause any injuries.

Hundreds of flights were also canceled in the region, preventing many passengers, some of whom are returning home for Christmas, from traveling.

In New York, where all public schools were closed on Thursday, officials said they had prepared for inclement weather so that vaccine delivery continued as planned.

Vaccination campaign against Covid-19

Shipping companies FedEX and UPS, responsible for delivering millions of doses to the country, said they had taken steps to alleviate any delays caused by the snow.

The United States launched its Covid-19 vaccination campaign at the start of this week. This requires a huge logistical effort to get the vaccines across the country.

Despite the disruption, many onlookers, some disguised as Elmo or Batman, engaged in copious snowball battles in the famous Times Square in New York.
