United States Extends Temporary Protection for Sudanese and Ukrainians until 2025

On Friday, the United States extended the temporary protection regime for Sudanese and Ukrainians until the spring of 2025, attributing this decision to the continuation of conflicts in both war-torn countries.

The US Department of Homeland Security said in separate statements that it will extend the temporary protection system for the two countries for an 18-month period, from October 20 to April 19, 2025.

The ministry also announced the introduction of other amendments, which will enable more qualified Sudanese and Ukrainians to apply for temporary protection, in what represents a kind of assistance for nationals of both countries studying in the United States, in order to maintain their student status, even if they are forced to reduce the number of courses from to increase their working time.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said: “The ongoing Russian military invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing humanitarian crisis require that the United States continue to provide safety and protection for Ukrainians, who may not be able to return to their country.”

“We will continue to extend our support to Ukrainian nationals through this temporary form of humanitarian relief,” he added.

Ministry officials also indicated that “violent clashes broke out in Sudan in April 2023, killing hundreds, causing political instability, violence and human rights violations against civilians.”

The ministry said that the extension decision will benefit about 1,200 Sudanese who are currently included in the temporary protection system, in addition to 2,750 others who are now eligible to join the system.

About 26 thousand Ukrainians are currently included in the temporary protection system, and it will qualify about 166 thousand Ukrainians to join the system.
