The United States stands on the position of expanding its influence in the UN Security Council when discussing the issue of its reform. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Aleynik told reporters about this.
“Most countries proceed from the fact that this reform should be exclusively fair. It should reflect new geopolitical realities and take into account the interests of the countries of the global South, primarily Africa, Latin America, and Asia, in terms of expanding the council. Of course, the initiative that came from the United States has a certain double bottom,” Aleynik noted.
As the head of the Foreign Ministry emphasized, “everyone understands perfectly well that the United States has played and to a certain extent continues to try to play a dominant role.” According to him, Washington’s proposals take into account, first of all, “the desire of the United States to expand its influence in the UN Security Council.”
The minister has no doubt that the majority of UN member countries and permanent members of the Security Council, such as Russia and China, will support these approaches.
“In our speech we also focused on the need to reform the council. But we did this solely from the point of view of taking into account new geopolitical realities and reflecting the interests of the countries of the global South in the council,” Aleinik emphasized. According to him, it is worth thinking about expanding the UN Security Council as a matter of priority to include the countries of “Africa, Latin America and Asia.” “Let’s hope that this issue will not only be further discussed, but we will be able to reach some kind of mutually acceptable solution that would take into account the interests of all UN member countries without exception and, naturally, the positions of the permanent members of the UN Security Council,” Aleynik said, whose words are quoted by TASS.
