The United States doubled its financial investment, to almost $ 1 billion, to support a possible vaccine against covid-19 developed by the American company Moderna, which enters Monday in the last phase of its clinical trial.
The US government has committed up to an additional $ 472 million, in addition to the previously announced $ 483 million, Moderna said in a statement on Sunday.
This extension of funding is justified, according to the biotech company, in which it decided to “conduct a considerably larger Phase 3 clinical trial” than originally planned.
His experimental vaccine, which triggered antibodies against the coronavirus in the 45 participants in the first phase of the trial, will be tested from Monday on 30,000 people. Half of them will receive a dose of 100 micrograms, the others a placebo.
The United States, the absolute worst-hit country in the world with more than 146,000 deaths and 4.2 million cases, has announced in recent months massive investments aimed at immunizing Americans since early next year.
