United States Donates 12,000 Doses of Pediatric Covid-19 Vaccines to Costa Rica

The United States donated 12,000 doses of bivalent pediatric vaccines against covid-19 to the country. Of them, 6,000 are for children between six months and four years old; and another 6,000 are intended for children between five and eleven years old.

The vaccines will be available in the different centers of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) starting Monday, February 12, reported the Ministry of Health.

This donation will allow minors who began the 2024 school year on February 8 to be protected against Covid-19, said the Minister of Health, Mary Munive Angermüller.

The doses will allow many of them to begin and complete their vaccination schedules.

On December 8, Costa Rica ran out of vaccines against covid-19 for all age groups. The doses that have arrived have been through donation.

In fact, on January 17, Costa Rica received 20,000 doses from Panama, of which 1,000 were intended for babies between six months and four years old. Another 1,000 were allocated for children between five and eleven years old.

This delivery is now joined by that of the United States, whose ambassador to the country, Cynthia Telles, highlighted the support that her government also gives for the protection of public health.

In a press release announcing the arrival of these new 12,000 doses, the Ministry of Health reiterates its call to the population to continue with the measures to prevent the spread of covid-19.

Health also urges parents to complete the vaccination schedules for their sons and daughters, and not to send minors to classes if they have cold symptoms.

Approved vaccine

On January 31, the National Commission for Vaccination and Epidemiology (CNVE) approved an updated vaccine against covid-19. This is the monovalent (against only one variant) XBB1.5.

The use of the product produced by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer with the company BioNTech, and that of the Moderna laboratory, was endorsed.

Until now, the scheme proposed for the country for this vaccination is unknown, nor whether it will be a booster for those who have the bivalent vaccine or will it be used from the initial scheme.

Health has also not communicated how many months we would have to wait since the last dose or infection of covid-19. La Nación consulted with the Ministry of Health and is still waiting for responses.

To date, it is unknown when the CCSS will have the vaccine. For the private market, the health registry is pending finalization so that drugs can be brought and sold in hospitals and private pharmacies.
