United States Discussing Safe Passage for Gaza Strip Civilians: White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States is discussing with Israel and Egypt the idea of allowing safe passage for civilians from the Gaza Strip, White House national security adviser Jake said on Tuesday Sullivan.

“We are focused on this issue, consultations are underway,” Jake Sullivan said during a White House press briefing.

“We are discussing the details between operational agencies and I do not want to share too much information publicly at this time,” he added.

Israel carried out the most intense retaliatory strikes in its history in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in response to the devastating attack carried out this weekend in several Israeli towns by fighters from the Palestinian Islamist movement.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, Israeli strikes carried out since Saturday against the Palestinian enclave have left 900 dead, including 260 children and 230 women, as well as 4,600 injured.

The United Nations says more than 180,000 people are now homeless in Gaza. The Palestinian enclave has some 2.3 million inhabitants.

According to the Israeli Embassy in the United States, more than 1,000 people were killed in the Hamas attack.
