United States disappointed by Palestinian President Abbas’ comments on Putin

WASHINGTON – The White House is “deeply disappointed” by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for expressing mistrust of Washington’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abbas, on the other hand, praised Russia’s position on this issue. The disappointment was voiced by a United States National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson told Axios on Saturday (10/15/2022).

On Thursday, when Abbas praised Russia’s “clear position” on a peace agreement between Palestinians and Israel, he reiterated his support for the so-called Quartet in the Middle East, a framework of mediators that includes Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the ‘European Union.

However, Abbas noted that Washington cannot be the only mediator.

“We do not trust America and you know our position … in no case can we accept that America is the only party to solve the problems,” Abbas told Putin on the sidelines of the Conference on Actions to Build Interaction. and trust in Asia in Astana. , Kazakhstan.

Abbas also praised Russia for “being faithful to justice and international law”.

According to two Axios sources, officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden were “furious” at Abbas’s statement and passed on that sentiment to his advisers.

An NSC spokesperson told the outlet that “We are very disappointed to hear President Abbas’ remarks to President Putin.”
