JAKARTA – The United States Congress has begun to intervene in the dispute between Beeper Mini and Apple. It seems that the issue of Beeper’s access to iMessage must be resolved legally.
From a report by Jo Ling Kent, reporter CBS News, on the X platform, four senators have complained to Apple to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) for alleged violations of antitrust laws.
The four senators who submitted the letter to the DOJ are Amy Klobuchar, Mike Lee, Jerrold Nadle, and Ken Buck. The four senators said that protecting market freedom and maintaining open competition is their duty.
Seeing the increasingly intense problems with Apple and Beeper Mini, the four admitted they were worried about Apple’s actions. They want to avoid monopoly efforts by limiting Beeper Mini’s access to iMessage.
“We are concerned that Apple’s recent action to disable Beeper Mini harms competition, eliminates choice for consumers, and will discourage future innovation and investment in interoperable messaging services,” they wrote in the letter.
Due to these concerns, the four senators asked the DOJ’s Antitrust Division to investigate the issues between Apple and Beeper Mini in depth. They want the Antitrust Division to find out whether Apple has violated antitrust laws.
Beeper Mini was first launched on December 5. Even though it has only been launched for two weeks, Beeper Mini’s access to iMessage has been blocked twice, on December 8 and December 17 to be precise.
Apple has said that they are not sure about Beeper’s security. They are afraid of unwanted problems such as spam or phishing. In order to maintain users’ digital security, they blocked Beeper’s access to iMessage.
