United States: Congress approves a text to help the semiconductor sector

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a massive bill to subsidize the semiconductor industry, hoping to allow U.S. companies to compete with China and ease the recurring shortage of chips which affected many sectors.

It is now up to President Joe Biden to promulgate the text, adopted by the Senate on Wednesday.

Twenty-four elected Republicans supported the bill, passed by 243 votes against 187.

The text provides approximately 52 billion dollars (51.24 billion euros) in subsidies for the manufacture of semiconductors in the United States, as well as a tax credit of 24 billion dollars for investment in chip factories.

In addition, it authorizes the allocation of more than 170 billion dollars over five years to help American scientific research, with the objective of better competing with China – it will however be necessary that separate texts be voted by Congress to put implement this measure.
