The United States records five confirmed cases of coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Sunday.
“We believe there are more cases,” said Nacy Messonnier, responsible for respiratory diseases at CDC, adding that they are analyzing 100 patients in 26 states in search of the virus originating in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
The five confirmed cases correspond to patients who had traveled to Wuhan, Messonier said during a conference call with journalists.
“Every case we have had in the United States is from someone who had direct contact in Wuhan,” he said.
He added that there are two cases in California, while the states of Arizona, Illinois and Washington present one case each.
While the Chinese authorities have launched an extraordinary emergency response, Messonier insisted that the health risk is low “at this time” for Americans.
In Canada, meanwhile, a traveler who was in Wuhan was diagnosed with the first suspected case of coronavirus, according to a senior Health official.
