United StatesCongressman who lied on resume urged to resign
Democrats want to oust Republican George Santos after he admitted he didn’t have a college degree or worked for prestigious banks.
Calls for the resignation of a newly elected Republican to the US Congress multiplied on Tuesday after he admitted that he had extensively lied about his curriculum vitae. George Santos wrested a seat from Democrats in New York state in the November election.
In two separate interviews on Monday, George Santos confessed to having “beautified his CV.” He has admitted that he has never worked for the prestigious banks Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, nor that he has obtained a degree, contrary to what he claims himself. These lies on several points of his biography had been revealed by a survey of the “New York Times”, published in mid-December.
However, the son of Brazilian immigrants born in Queens, New York, has categorically shelved the idea of giving up the seat he will occupy from January 3 in the House of Representatives, telling the “New York Post” that he “is not a criminal”.
“There’s No Smoke Without Fire”
Several Democratic Party members have called on Republican opposition leader Kevin McCarthy to call a vote to oust George Santos if the latter does not resign on his own. “The House Ethics Committee MUST investigate how he made his money,” Ritchie Torres, another New York elected official, also urged, adding, “There’s no smoke without fire.”
New York state, considered pro-Democrat, has seen several elected seats in the House of Representatives switch to the Republican side, contributing to their narrow majority in Washington’s lower house. Democrats retained their majority in the Senate.
