The United States Tennis Federation has announced the appointment of Bob Bryan, legendary doubles player alongside his twin brother Mike, as captain of the United States Davis Cup team.
Bob Bryan will not be away from the United States Davis Cup team for very long. Three years after his last game in the American jersey and six months after serving as interim captain in the absence of covid-affected Mardy Fish, the former player, who turns 45 next month, has been named captain of the United States team. He will make his debut next September in the group stage, replacing Mardy Fish.
“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to captain the USA Davis Cup team. I was inspired to see these young American players continue to progress and I am motivated to contribute to this positive momentum. I am grateful to have represented my country in the Davis Cup. These experiences gave me my strongest moments on the court and my most unforgettable memories. Playing the Davis Cup was a dream for me as a junior and the goal of making the team drove me while I was playing on the tour. I look forward to working with the players, their coaches, the teams and the staff of the Federation in our mission to bring the Cup back to the United States”, reacted the one who had won the Davis Cup in 2007 against Russia, with Andy Roddick, James Blake and his twin brother Mike, with whom he won sixteen Grand Slam tournaments.
An impressive American tank
The United States, eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Davis Cup by Italy, can clearly claim final victory in the coming years. The American tank is indeed quite impressive, with no less than fourteen players in the Top 100, and three in the Top 20: Taylor Fritz (5th), Frances Tiafoe (16th) and Tommy Paul (19th). Not to mention Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, who are currently world No. 3 and No. 9 in doubles. While the United States hold the record for Davis Cup victories (32), they have only won it once in the 21st century. Will Bob Bryan be able to fix the anomaly?
