United States: Bill Gates – Challenges

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said Thursday his climate investment fund would commit $ 1.5 billion to joint projects with the U.S. government if Congress enacted a program to develop technologies that reduce emissions of carbon.

The Senate on Tuesday adopted an investment plan of $ 1.2 trillion.

It provides for $ 550 billion in new federal spending to renovate roads, bridges and transport, but also in high-speed internet and to fight climate change, for example by setting up a network of charging stations for electric cars.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Bill Gates specifies that the 1.5 billion could be spent over three years on projects aimed at slowing greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for climate change.

Projects could include producing emission-free fuel for airplanes and developing technology to capture carbon dioxide from the air.

“It is essential to reduce the costs of these technologies and deploy them on a massive scale,” commented Mr. Gates. “Deploying at this level means the government is coming with the right policies, and that is exactly what is in this infrastructure bill,” he said.

However, the plan has yet to get the green light from the House of Representatives. A final vote is not expected until the fall.
