WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US President Joe Biden on Friday called on nations meeting next week at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to agree to lift intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines after the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus in South Africa.

“The news about this new variant must raise awareness more than ever that this pandemic will not end until we have vaccination on a global scale,” Joe Biden said in a statement.

“This news today reiterates the importance of acting on this point (lifting of intellectual property protections, editor’s note) quickly,” added the US president.
