The United States has more than 19,600 deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, and thus has the most deaths in the world. The country thus passes Italy, which has 19,468 deaths.
The United States has suffered the highest death rate recorded to date during the corona outbreak over the past four days. About 2,000 people died of the virus every day in the US.
U.S. health authorities warn that the death toll could rise to 200,000 this summer if U.S. President Donald Trump reverses orders to stay at home in the coming days.
Trump has said he wants to get the American economy going again as soon as possible, preferably after Easter. On Friday, he called the decision whether or not to abolish the home stay measures “the most difficult choice I have ever had to make.”
The epicenter of the outbreak is currently in New York City, where more than 5,800 people have died from the effects of the virus to date. There are also concerns about the state of Wisconsin, where last week the presidential primaries ordered by the state’s Republican court continued.
