International star Beyonce demanded “justice” for George Floyd, an African-American who died in Minneapolis when he was arrested by the police, and called for a petition that has already collected more than 7 million signatures.
“We can no longer look elsewhere”
“We need to see justice done for George Floyd,” said the singer in this 50-second video posted on the night of Friday to Saturday on Instagram, where she has 147 million subscribers.
“We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We are broken and disgusted, ”she said against the backdrop of piano notes. “I’m not just talking to people of color. Whether you are white, black, mixed race or anything else, I am sure you feel desperate for the racism that exists in America today. ”
“We can no longer look elsewhere,” added the 38-year-old celebrity, herself an African-American. “George is our family (…) because he is American. Too many times we have seen these violent murders, and no consequences. ”
“Yes, someone has been charged, but justice is far from being done,” she said.
A link added to his Instagram profile links to his official website, which displays a photo of George Floyd overlooked by the hashtag #Wecantbreathe (“We can’t breathe anymore”), in reference to the last words of Mr. Floyd, begging the white policeman who kept his knee on his to relax his grip.
The petition launched on the Change.org site to demand justice, and in which Beyonce invites internet users to participate, has already collected more than 7 million signatures, making it the petition with the most support in the history of the site, said the latter. She was also relayed by stars Ariana Grande and Cardi B.
“I am tired”
Other American celebrities have risen to denounce the death of George Floyd.
“In recent days, the extent of the despair, anger and sadness that I have felt overwhelmed me,” said singer Rihanna in a message posted under a photo of George Floyd on her Instagram account.
“Derek Chauvin haunts me!”, She said of the police charged with manslaughter, denouncing “murders and lynchings, day after day”.
“I’m tired of seeing black men die,” said black American rapper Killer Mike in Atlanta on Friday evening, stifling tears as he spoke. “We want to see the system that implements systemic racism reduced to ashes,” he pleaded, while calling on protesters across the United States to calm down.
