United States Approves First Vaccine for Pregnant Women to Prevent Bronchiolitis in Babies

WASHINGTON The United States became the first country on Monday to pass a vaccine for pregnant that prevents bronchiolitis in their babies.

The pharmaceutical giant’s vaccine Pfizer has received the green light for use between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation to protect infants from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported.

This is a single injection that is given into a muscle.

Babies will be protected for the first six months of life, the FDA explains.

The same vaccine has been authorized since May in the United States for people over 60 years of age.

It was also approved in July by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), both for babies and for the elderly, but the European Commission must now decide whether to approve its marketing in the European Union.

This virus “is a common cause of illness in children, and infants are among those most at risk of severe illness, which can lead to hospitalization,” said Peter Marks, director of the Center for Evaluation and Research. FDA Biological.
