“Today, I announce the end of sanctions exemptions for all nuclear projects in Iran,” said U.S. diplomacy chief Mike Pompeo in a statement.
Mike Pompeo said he would revoke all sanctions exceptions covering civil nuclear cooperation, with the exceptions allowing Russian, European and Chinese companies to continue to work on Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities.
Now, the countries still adhering to the Iranian nuclear agreement and involved in these projects are at risk of being sanctioned by the United States if they do not withdraw, a fact that worries, above all, Russia.
“The Iranian regime has continued its nuclear link by expanding activities sensitive to proliferation,” Pompeo said in a statement, pointing out that Tehran has admitted activities that violate the agreement.
The U.S. withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018.
The “civil-nuclear cooperation” exemptions allowed foreign companies to work on some of Iran’s declared nuclear facilities without being subject to U.S. sanctions.
