It was probably his lucky day. This Tuesday, Andrew Cho, at the controls of his small plane, had to make a crash landing on Highway 91 in southern California. The aircraft struck a pick-up as it crashed, before breaking up and catching fire. But neither the pilot, nor his passenger, nor even the three people in the car were injured.

The spectacular images of the accident, broadcast in particular by the firefighters of the city of Corona, who intervened on the scene, quickly made the rounds of the Net. A camera on board a vehicle traveling at the very location of the crash also captured the precise moment, at 12:30 p.m. local time, when the single-engine literally fell from the sky in the middle of the cars.

“My biggest fear was hitting cars”

According to NBC News, the pilot had taken off earlier in the day from Corona Municipal Airport for a short flight. But while he was on the return trip, his Piper PA-32 suddenly lost power. Obliged to land the plane as quickly as possible, Andrew Cho had to resolve to land on the highway. “My biggest fear was hitting cars,” he told the American news channel. I saw an empty space in traffic and walked over to it.”

During the manoeuvre, the plane struck a pick-up truck traveling on the expressway. The driver was on his way to visit his family, with two other people on board, when he felt the impact with the device. All three are unharmed. The driver said he was “glad not to have been killed,” reports NBC News. The police also praised the composure of Andrew Cho’s pilot. “We were very lucky today, traffic was light and the pilot sailed well and avoided a terrible tragedy,” said captain Levi Miller.
