United States: 99.5% of people who have died from Covid since January were not vaccinated

The vast majority of deaths linked to Covid-19 appear to be preventable through vaccination. Across the Atlantic, data collected by the Centers for Disease Prevention (CDC) suggests that 99.5% of people who have died from the virus since January were not vaccinated.

These figures confirm the effectiveness of vaccines, administered in the United States from December, said Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC. Now, “every death linked to the virus is completely preventable,” she added.

Contamination due to the Delta variant on the rise

These data are also welcome against the background of the progression of the Delta variant, which is more contagious than the original strain of Covid. In the United States, this mutation of the virus currently represents 25% of new cases. Certain regions of the country are particularly affected. The latter, located mainly in the South, East and Midwest, are also among the least vaccinated.

Nearly 1,000 counties have vaccinated less than 30% of their population. The CDC began to record “increased contamination rates” there, in particular because of the Delta variant. In response, the Biden administration announced Thursday that it would deploy rapid response teams across the United States, particularly to areas where the new strain of the virus is spreading.

Slowing down of the vaccination campaign

The United States, for a time well placed in the vaccination race, is losing ground. The number of new injections has slowed considerably in the country. Less than half of eligible Americans are fully vaccinated, recalls the US business magazine “Forbes”.

In particular, strong political divisions within the country. The 18 states that exceeded Joe Biden’s target of 70% of people vaccinated by July 4 voted for him in the presidential election.
