United puts its flights between Washington DC and Cape Town up for sale

United has put its flights between Washington DC and Cape Town up for sale, becoming the only airline to offer a non-stop route between the US capital and South Africa’s second largest city.

Recently, the US Department of Transportation (DoT) granted the airline authorization to carry out three weekly flights starting on November 17, although approval from the South African authorities is still awaited.

“We are delighted to expand our offering in Africa with this first direct link between Washington DC and Cape Town,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances.

“These new flights add to our current year-round New York/Newark to Cape Town service – together they will provide a near-daily pattern from the United States to Cape Town, along with connectivity to the wider region via of our partnership with Airlink,” added Quayle.

Flight itinerary

  • Washington D.C.–Cape Town U.A. Flight 2222 IAD 18:40 – CPT 16:10+1 Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

This new route will be United’s third nonstop service to South Africa. The company currently offers daily flights between Newark (EWR) and Johannesburg (JNB) and recently started year-round operations to Cape Town (CPT) with three weekly flights from Newark (EWR).

It will also be the third African connection offered by the company from Washington-Dulles, after services to Accra (ACC) and Lagos (LOS), both with a schedule of three flights a week operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

For the winter season, United will have an offer of 9,598 seats per week in 38 air operations between the United States and Africa, and is also the largest US operator in South Africa.
