United Nations Special Envoy: 16.7 Million Syrians in Need of Humanitarian Assistance

Geneva (Union)

The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced yesterday that 16.7 million people in Syria need humanitarian assistance due to the ongoing conflict.
This came in a statement published by Pedersen, on the occasion of the anniversary of the outbreak of the crisis in Syria, which today enters its fourteenth year.
Pedersen said: “The solemn anniversary of the Syrian conflict coincides with escalating tensions at the regional level as well as across the country, as the conflict enters its fourteenth year with no political solution in sight.”
He added: “Syrians have long suffered from indescribable violence and destruction, which indiscriminately affected young and old, men and women, and all segments of society.”
Pedersen pointed out that the humanitarian crisis in Syria continues to worsen, saying: “16.7 million people need humanitarian assistance, which is the largest number of people in need since the beginning of the conflict.” He stressed that there are more than 5 million refugees living in neighboring countries, and more than 7 million displaced people inside Syria, whose economy has also collapsed.
He continued: “Refugees and displaced people still lack the conditions necessary for a safe, dignified and voluntary return, and their critical concerns regarding protection and livelihoods, which are fundamental, remain unresolved.”
Pedersen explained that the international community must unite its efforts to push towards the political process in accordance with Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), including confidence-building measures, resuming the work of the Constitutional Committee, and ultimately comprehensively addressing the full range of issues that must be resolved to end this crisis.
