The United Nations announced, on Friday, that it is seeking to communicate with the leaders of the military coup in Niger after they suspended the work of its agencies and other organizations in the military “areas of operations”.
“We have seen the reports,” said UN spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci. “We are trying to communicate with the de facto authorities in Niger to better understand what this means and what the implications are for humanitarian action.”
Her statements came after the military regime announced, on Thursday, the suspension of all activities of international and non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies.
“Given the current security situation and the ongoing operational commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Ministry is informing international organizations, national and international NGOs and UN agencies present in Niger, that all activities and/or movements in areas of operations are temporarily suspended,” the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement carried by national radio. .

The specter of a military clash looms on the horizon as current diplomatic attempts to reach a compromise have so far failed.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) revealed, on Thursday night, the truth of the proposal that was circulated regarding a transitional period of 9 months in Niger.
And ECOWAS confirmed in a statement posted on its website that everything attributed to it regarding an alleged proposal for a transitional phase granted to the military junta in Niger is totally untrue.
And she stressed, in a statement issued late Thursday night, that what was attributed to her was just “fake news.”
