United Nations condemns Russian annexation of occupied Ukrainian regions | NOW

The United Nations condemned the annexation of four Ukrainian regions to Russia. At the General Assembly, Russia’s move was called illegal. The vote followed two days of Russian attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.

143 member states voted in favor, 5 against and 35 abstained, including the major powers China and India. The sentence has no consequences, but is seen as a sign that Russia is further isolating itself internationally.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the vote “a powerful reminder that the vast majority of countries are on Ukraine’s side”.

Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February, the UN had already denounced the “aggression” of Russia. Russia was then asked to immediately withdraw its troops, but Russia did not obey. That call was then approved with 141 votes. Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria voted against and 35 countries abstained. This time Nicaragua supported Russia instead of Eritrea.

Russia’s annexation of the occupied regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk has already been strongly condemned internationally. EU leaders have promised Russia they can count on further sanctions.
