United Nations Condemns Bombing of Gaza City Compound and Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Strip

On Sunday, the United Nations Development Program expressed its deep sorrow after initial reports indicating that the United Nations compound in Gaza City was bombed yesterday, killing and wounding a large number of people.

The program said, in a statement carried by the Arab World News Agency, that “the ongoing tragedy of killing and wounding of civilians involved in this conflict is unacceptable and must stop.”

He added, “Civilians, civilian infrastructure, and the inviolability of United Nations facilities must be respected and protected at all times… International humanitarian law must be respected, including the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution.”

The situation is becoming more tragic for hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip, where two premature infants died due to a power outage in a pediatric intensive care unit, according to a non-governmental organization, while violent battles took place nearby between the Israeli army and Hamas fighters.

20 out of a total of 36 hospitals in the sector are “out of service,” according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Internationally, calls are intensifying for Israel to protect civilians.

Five weeks after the start of the war, Israel announced (Friday) that it had reduced the death toll from the lightning attack launched by Hamas on October 7 from 1,400 to 1,200 dead, explaining that “this toll is not final.” Hamas fighters also took approximately 240 people hostage and transported them to Gaza.

On the Palestinian side, more than 11,078 people, including more than 4,506 children, were killed in the Israeli bombing of Gaza, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
