Managua: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on the world to urgently reveal the secret whereabouts of Siuna Diocese President Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora, who was unjustly arrested by Nicaragua’s totalitarian regime.
The dictatorial regime led by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his wife and Vice President Rosario Murillo took Bishop into custody last December 20.
20 days later, there is no news of Bishop Isidoro. The United Nations office on social media, X, said that withholding information and isolating the bishop from his lawyers and family would pose a serious threat to his life and safety.
Apart from this, the human rights organization also condemned the arrest of priests and believers. The organization reminded that the government is not only infringing on their personal freedom but also the right to freedom of religion which is the pillar of any democratic country.
Isidoro Mora was arrested after saying after Mass that he should pray for Matagalpa Diocese Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who has been unjustly accused of treason and imprisoned for 26 years. Nicaraguan researcher and human rights activist Marta Patricia revealed that the two seminary students were also missing. The dictatorial regime under Daniel Ortega is behind the priest hunt in Nicaragua.
The arrest of Bishop Rolando Alvarez, president of the Diocese of Matagalpa, is one of the most notorious in the list of atrocities committed by the Nicaraguan dictatorship. He was placed under house arrest in August 2022 after questioning the state’s authoritarianism. After a lengthy trial, Alvarez was convicted in February 2023 of being a ‘traitor to the motherland’ and sentenced to over 26 years in prison. Bishop is still in prison.
