United Kingdom and Australia sign trade agreement, Australian farmers not happy

The United Kingdom and Australia have signed a trade agreement. It is the UK’s first foreign agreement since Brexit.

A trade deal with Australia was a priority for the British. They want to strengthen their business and diplomatic ties in the Indo-Pacific region.

It is still unclear what exactly agreements were made about; the details will be announced later. But Australian farmers have already said they fear the agreements will see tariffs on British lamb and beef removed and put them out of business.

‘Especially symbolically important’

The agreement came about after a meeting between British Prime Minister Johnson and his Australian counterpart Morrison. The two had met on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Cornwall and spoke at length in London yesterday.

The agreement would generate almost 600 million euros in the long term. According to critics, the agreement is mainly symbolically important.
