Los Angeles, Jun 3 (EFE) .- The US airline United Airlines announced on Thursday a commercial agreement with the aerospace company Boom Supersonic for the purchase of 15 supersonic aircraft capable of connecting Newark airport, next to New York, with London in three and a half hours of flight.
Under the terms of the agreement, United will acquire 15 aircraft of the “Overture” model, once it meets the airline’s “demanding safety, operation and sustainability requirements”, with an option to purchase 35 additional aircraft.
This was indicated by United in a statement, in which it explained that “Overture”, which is scheduled to be implemented in 2025, fly in 2026 and transport passengers in 2029, will be the first large commercial aircraft to have zero emissions by running on 100% fuel. Sustainable Development (SAF).
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said that this decision is part of the company’s strategic plan to build a “more innovative and sustainable” airline.
“Boom’s vision for the future of commercial aviation, combined with the strongest route network in the industry, will provide business and leisure passengers with access to a stellar flying experience,” said Kirby.
According to data provided by United, the “Overture” planes will be capable of flying at speeds of Mach 1.7 (about 2,082 kilometers per hour), twice the speed of today’s fastest passenger planes.
Potential future routes for United with this fleet include Newark to London in three and a half hours, Newark to Frankfurt (Germany) in four hours and San Francisco (California, USA) to Tokyo in six hours.
In addition, the Overture models will also be designed with features such as in-seat entertainment screens, ample personal space and contactless technology.
