Detroit, capital of Michigan and stronghold of the automobile made in the USA, does not lead far. From the weekend of August 20, the 150,000 members of the UAW (“United Auto Workers”), the powerful union of workers in the American auto industry, began to go to the polls. The ballot, the result of which will be known on Thursday August 24, should give their delegates a mandate to decide, if necessary, on a historic strike if their demands are not accepted before September 14, the date of the expiry of their contract. In expectation, the “Big Three” see their room for maneuver shrinking every day. Ford is already discreetly asking its executives to ensure, in the worst scenario, the shipment of cars to dealerships. General Motors, bruised in 2019 by a 40-day walkout which cost it nearly three billion dollars in turnover, is trying, like Stellantis, parent company of Chrysler and Jeep, to appeal to the “economic realism” of employees. All three argue the potential damage of the conflict as manufacturers begin their transition to the era of the electric car.
