United Almost Collided in Hawaii, 357 Meters Away

Jakarta

A plane from United Airlines almost collided at Hawaii’s Honolulu Airport. This incident took place several months ago.

Launch CNNOn Monday (27/2/2023), investigators said a United Airlines captain who crossed the runway where another plane landed last month in Honolulu had situationally lost consciousness. He was surprised by the instructions from air traffic controllers.

The January 23 incident was one of four near-misses involving planes on US airport runways so far this year investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The NTSB’s initial report said a United captain took over the Boeing 777 from the first officer after it landed in Honolulu.

The pair had previously discussed in accordance with their airline’s landing guidelines not to sit idly by in the short walkway location between the two runways. Then they were shocked by air traffic control instructions to do just that.

“He indicated that he lost situational awareness as they exited runway 4R because he thought there was more distance between runways than there really was,” the NTSB report said.

The captain indicated that there did not appear to be enough space for the B777. Meanwhile, the plane that landed was a small cargo turboprop Cessna, in which the United jet passed.

At their closest point, the planes were only 357 meters away. Luckily no evasive action was required or taken by the smaller aircraft, the report said.

United Airlines has not responded to a request for comment on this report.
