While other manufacturers have almost abandoned this clip-on tablet concept, Microsoft is continuing it and has virtually no direct competition. Such a device makes sense especially for those who want a thin and easily portable device that allows for simple sketching and sketching. At the same time, it can also fully replace a laptop and, when connected to a USB-C dock with keyboard, mouse and monitor, a desktop computer.

Surface Pro 9 maintains the standard of highest quality workmanship from sandblasted aluminum alloy with a handy slim slide-out stand. This allows for excellent positioning of the tablet, whether with the keyboard attached or detached, which will give you many ways to use it.

Compared to Android tablets, the Surface Pro 9 is a bit stronger, but still easy to handle, weighing in at an acceptable 854g

For comfortable typing

The big pride of the tablet is the display with high resolution and brightness or coverage of the entire sRGB color space, only the colors are no longer very accurate, the ΔE deviation was more than 5.87. The keyboard is held using strong magnets in two places: the bottom of the tablet and just below the display. Thanks to this, it is raised on the back of the desk, which makes writing easier.

At the top center of the keyboard pressed against the tablet is an ingeniously stored stylus, also loaded here, so you’ll always have it at your disposal. It is flat and its shape resembles a carpenter’s pencil. Like other Microsoft pens, it has a programmable button on the top, and this end of the pen doubles as an eraser on the display.

The keyboard backlight is just one example, there is almost no light from the sides of the keys, you will only see the writing, plus you have three levels of backlight brightness available

The surrounding area and the underside of the keyboard are traditionally covered in Alcantara imitation leather, which is pleasant to the touch and easy to clean. Traditionally typing is great and fast on the keyboard, the keys have optimal travel and even quite large arrows or Czech labels are pleasing (the tested piece did not have these, but you can usually buy it with Czech labels). Only Enter remained divided with an umlaut that is rarely used in our country, which can be a source of typos. However, the backlighting of the keys is really exemplary, they practically do not shine from the side and you can choose between three brightness levels, so there is no danger that it will disturb you at night.

The only minor complaint I have is the touchpad, which is great to use and its integrated button can be pressed on the vast majority of the surface. However it is very noisy, so much so that you will have to turn it off in a quiet environment so as not to disturb others.

The only thing you can change on the tablet, and very easily, is the M.2 SSD (2230) located under the small back cover, which is held only by a strong magnet

At the heart of this tablet is the latest Intel Core i7-1265U processor from the Alder Lake family. As the letter U in the name suggests, it is a budget model with a lower TDP and only two powerful and eight budget cores. Even so, the tablet has performance to spare, aided by the fast M.2 SSD, sadly with a capacity of only 256GB, while the extra cost for a higher one is truly extraordinary: you pay CZK 7,900 more for the 512GB version, so 1TB with another is better just two hundred more. Everything works great thanks to 16 GB of RAM and optimized Windows 11.

The tablet also lasts a long time on battery, especially if you don’t use it too much: It lasted me less than 19 hours on a single charge during my office work. While it doesn’t look like it, the tablet is not only passively cooled, it also contains a fan. During light work and browsing, you won’t know about the tablet, but the fan runs up to maximum processor load with moderate tolerable noise, and after additional load, the rear top is hot and performance started to decrease, by about 15%.

Surprisingly high quality sound

The speakers located on the sides play from the gap between the metal parts of the body. It will surprise you with its clean and clear volume, which also includes deeper tones. It’s amazing that such high-quality sound comes from a thin body of just 9.3 mm. You can enjoy watching movies or listening to music on your tablet.

The other equipment of this tablet is really great. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports have recently been added via two USB-C connectors, which also allow for tablet charging and the system connector. Wireless connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi 6E and the quality of both high-resolution cameras are also top-notch. Overall, the Surface Pro 9 is an extremely versatile device with which you can handle even more demanding tasks and work, draw and sketch practically anywhere.
