KlikBabel.com.com – The European Space Agency (ESA) is designing a new rover robot, similar to a hamster ball, to explore caves on the Moon to find a place to live.

Named Daedalus, the explorer has a diameter of 46 centimeters, or roughly twice the size of a football.

The robotic feature suite includes an immersive stereoscopic camera, a lidar system for creating three-dimensional map of cave interiors, a temperature sensor and a radiation dosimeter.

To avoid obstacles and test rocks, the robot also has extendable arms.

While on the Moon, Daedalus will be lowered into a cave via a mooring cable, before finally rolling off independently with a built-in battery pack.

The cables will serve as WiFi receivers, allowing the robots to send data back to the scientists.

“The design was created to observe the surroundings in a full 360 degrees and the need to protect the interior from the harsh environment of the Moon,” said Dorit Borrmann of the Daedalus team. Independent, Wednesday (31/3/2021).

The robot can be used to map caves for future astronauts, who may have to live in caves during their exploration of the Moon.

Previously, a cave on the Moon had been identified by the Japanese space agency as a potential refuge for astronauts, with long, dead lava tubes stretching for miles.

Daedalus isn’t the only concept ESA is exploring for future Moon missions.

The space agency also has designs for other studies, including a rover that will scout and map lava tubes by hopping.
