JAKARTA – Unique species of sea creatures in the area Antarctica began to appear before the researchers. Despite its large and hairy appearance, scientists identified it as a strawberry.
The appearance of a soft, large, and hairy strawberry is equipped with 20 arm-like tentacles. When put together they reach 8 inches in length.
University of California, San Diego marine life professor Greg Rouse explained to Insider that while it looks like an alien at first, the strawberry creature has little bumps all over its arms.
So new, Rouse’s findings along with other researchers, Emily McLaughlin and Nerid Wilson, were immediately published in last month’s issue of Invertebrate Systimatics.
“After opening the thin membrane between the tentacles, you can see a flesh-like shape like a strawberry. At the bottom there are nails that grip when walking on the seabed,” said Rouse.
Promachocrinus fragarius, apparently that’s the Latin name for the strawberry. Fragarius from the Latin fragum also means strawberry. A unique creature It belongs to the class Crinoidea, aka siblings to starfish, sea urchins, sand dollars and sea cucumbers.
Another name pinned by Rouse, namely the Antarctic Feather Star. He also stated that there is only one species similar to the strawberry named Promachocrinus kerguelensis. The difference lies only in the number of arms.
Scientists from the US and Australia also claim to have found similar species. Rouse confirmed similar species can only be found at a depth of 215 feet to 3,840 feet underwater.
