Unique, Shaun the Sheep Joins NASA’s Mission to the Moon

JAKARTA – The character Shaun the Sheep is making history by joining the flight to the moon on the mission Artemis I NASA to the moon. The involvement of the figure created by Aardman Animations was revealed after the crew list of Artemis I was announced.

In that list Shaun the Sheep will be in the Orion spacecraft which will depart from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, United States at the end of this summer. Shaun the Sheep will later adventure with other astronauts around the moon.

Not only Shaun the Sheep, the sheep that always follow him will also be dispatched. The difference is that according to the Daily Mail, the sheep will only be put in capsules Orion.

“This is an exciting time for Shaun and us at ESA,” said Dr David Parker, Director of Human and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency (ESA).

“We are very pleased that he has been selected for the mission and we understand that, while it may be a small step for humans, this is a giant leap for sheep,” he said.

Although in the form of a figure, Shaun the Sheep still follows the training and preparation that an astronaut should do before flying into space. He has also traveled to locations across Europe and the United States to look at various aspects of the mission, which will be presented in a series of ESA blog posts leading up to the launch.

One of the exercises done by Shaun the Sheep is to follow a flight with an Airbus aircraft with the Zero G feature or Zero Gravity. In that condition, Shaun the Sheep felt how the condition of floating when he was in outer space that had no gravity.

Lucy Wendover, Director of Marketing at Aardman said they were thrilled that Shaun the Sheep was involved in the flight into space. According to him, the event will be history because Shaun the Sheep will be the first “sheep” into space.

“As one of the first astronauts to fly the Artemis mission, Shaun took the lead in lunar exploration, a great honor for our feathered adventurer,” he said.
