A Dokkum thrift store has come across a book with special photos of Camp Westerbok. The album is full of photos from 1939, when the camp was still under construction. There are not many photos from that period, says Joost Tanasale, spokesperson for the Camp Westerbork Remembrance Center.
The photo book was found when the De Fûgelpits thrift store cleared a house on behalf of a housing association. “Sometimes something comes along to show. There were a lot of things in this house. All kinds of things. The owner was a real collector,” says Jappie Wiersma of the thrift store. Omrop Fryslân.
The camp was built in 1939 on behalf of the government. Initially it was intended as a reception location for Jewish refugees. The photos show that a synagogue and hospital are under construction on the camp site.

Tanasale suspects that the album belonged to an architect of the camp: “We recognize some of the photos we received by email from a collection of the architect of the refugee camp, but not others.”
The finder of the album will bring the photos to the memorial center next week. Tanasale says at the regional broadcaster that he likes the fact that someone with a good sense of history is emptying houses.
